Kiran's new preschool has brightly colored pieces of paper with "Please" and "Thank You" written in all different languages...Arabic, German, French, Hebrew, Korean, Japanese, Chinese...but no Hindi. So this morning as we were looking at them I asked his teacher if we could hang one in Hindi, too. She got me a piece of paper to write it on and Kiran was really excited. He made me write it twice, so he could keep a copy with him and his teacher could have one to hang. So, he learned 'shukriya' and 'dhanyavaad', two ways to say thank you in Hindi. He picked up shukriya really quickly but then would say, "And there's two ways to say it...the other way is hard." But by tonight he was willing to try. It sounds more like ton-you-vaad...but he's trying and it's pretty darn cute!
