A couple stories from our day

I have a kind of sad story...I broke Kiran's heart today, which in turn broke mine!! And it really all came about because I was being nice!

Kiran comes to my office relatively often to visit the graduate students in the lab. He has a bin of toys there, paper/markers, likes to draw on the whiteboard, and likes to pretend he's "working" or "checking my email" at the second desk/computer in my office. Well, over the weekend I learned that another postdoc in my department doesn't have her own office nor her own desktop computer. So, naturally, I offered her the second desk/computer in my office. What I didn't think about was how upset Kiran would be. We nearly stopped by the office this afternoon so I mentioned very delicately that someone else would be working at the desk he likes to sit at. He got soooo sad, his lip/chin started quivering, tears swelled in his eyes, and his voice was shakey. But he was trying so hard to be a big boy and not cry. And he was doing his best to rationalize it all, telling me, "That computer is old, that's why she gave it to me...but if she wants to use yours or mine that's fine." He just kept, on the verge of all out crying, telling me how the computer was old. When I suggested that we could take his laptop with us when we went to the office, he just lost it. Poor guy...my heart was breaking for him - he was just so upset! Fortunately, Nishu is full of good ideas and is bringing my old "real" laptop from the old house for him. And Kiran really likes that idea. He said, "It's only our computer only for you, me, and papa." When I agreed with him and told him we wouldn't let anyone take it he said, "If someone else needs it they can use it. They can just press the buttons." Such a generous soul...even after having his heart broken!

----------------------------------------------

Just to lighten things up a bit, when Angy (Nishu's sister) called tonight and I asked if he'd like to talk to her, Kiran said "Yeah, I'm not too busy to talk to my friend, Bua." LOL!
